The entry into force of RD 56/2016 makes it mandatory for certain companies to carry out energy audits and their communication to the competent administration, although also, companies that do not meet the minimum requirements to enter within the scope of application of said Royal Decree, They can benefit if their buildings and facilities are subject to an energy audit, obtaining, in addition to a reduction in CO2 emissions generated by the activity, a reduction in energy expenditure, and therefore, an economic saving that in some cases it can be considerable.

RD 56/2016 obliges large companies to carry out energy audits and communicate the results of them to the Administration every 4 years.

The process of conducting an energy audit consists mainly of three phases, the first is that of requesting information on energy consuming equipment, later, the visit / s of the technician to the installation are made to collect data, and perform of measurements of energy consuming equipment at the most important points, previously analyzed on the information from the previous phase. Finally, the phase of conducting the audit report, where the results, proposals for Energy Saving Measures (MAEs) and conclusions of their Implementation Plan are shown, as well as the communication data to the administration.

How to know if my company must pass an energy audit


It is considered a large company, and therefore it must by law carry out an energy audit every 4 years, one that meets one of the following requirements:


    That employ at least 250 people That have a business volume that exceeds 50 million euros, and at par, a balance sheet that exceeds 43 million euros Be groups of companies, defined as established in article 42 of the Commercial Code, which, taking into account the aggregated figures of all the companies that make up the consolidated group, meet the aforementioned requirements of a large company.


If your company meets one or more of these requirements, it must undergo an energy audit every four years that covers, at least, 85 percent of the total final energy consumption of all the facilities located in the national territory that are part of the industrial, commercial and service activities that said companies and groups manage in the development of their economic activity.
